How dare they bully my kid...Kipling would be proud.

I'm sure all teachers experience this at some point, but today was the first time it's happened to me.

I did what I was meant to do when encountered with this kind of problem. The dire situation did not become apparent until near the end of class when I saw one of the sweetest guys in my class turning purple with a quiet rage.  I gave the bullied personage an 'out' while the classes changed and asked him if he wanted to stay in the room for a second while the halls cleared and the other boys dispersed.  I notified his teacher for the next block (super lady and very supportive) and the VP (equally supportive and incredibly kind) and I hung out with this wonderful teenage boy for 15-20 min while he calmed down.  The VP took him after he got 'the signal' and the young man gave me a hug and said 'thank you.'  I know I handled it by the book, but I was just furious.

I just have a hard time wrapping my brain around the mentality it takes to be cruel to such a kind, funny person.  In addition to that...the mentality of those who would continue to stand by and let it persist.  It sounds silly, but, even though they're almost grown, for that 90 min they're in my room...they're my kids.  How dare someone bully my kids!  The behavior is unacceptable in any arena.

My mini rant is over, but I don't think I'll ever forget that hug...young man indeed.  He kept his chin up and rose above it...it was like seeing 'If' manifested before me.  Kipling would have had a catch in his throat.
